Yes, an active Apple Music subscription is required for in-app playback. You can still sync playlists and view audio metadata without a subscription, but playing tracks requires Apple Music.

Heart Rate Play reads your real-time heart rate from your Apple Watch via HealthKit and maps it to one of five zones: Rest, Light, Moderate, Hard, and Peak. Each zone has tailored BPM, energy, and danceability ranges. BeatMix automatically selects and queues songs that match your current zone, with gapless transitions as your heart rate changes. Optional voice announcements speak the zone name when you cross thresholds.
BeatMix offers a free tier with 100 BPM matches and 3 Heart Rate Play sessions — enough to try all the features. BeatMix Pro unlocks unlimited BPM matches, unlimited HR Play, and the ability to save custom mix presets. Available as a monthly or yearly subscription.
BeatMix currently works exclusively with Apple Music via Apple's MusicKit framework. Spotify support is not available at this time.
